A. The classic coverup is louvered doors, either the sliding variety or the kind that fold. The trick is to find doors that have the heft associated with high-quality construction. Too many of them wiggle and writhe when they are opened and closed, largely because of low-grade hinges that cannot withstand the strain.
Kestrel Shutters and Doors in Stowe, Pa., has 10 custom-made closet door options, all equipped with sturdy residential- or commercial-grade hardware by L. E. Johnson Products, a manufacturer in Elkhart, Ind. They range from standard plantation shutters to doors that combine a lower panel of louvers or tongue-and-groove bead board with a top panel of glass or mirror. All are constructed with pegs and old-fashioned mortise-and-tenon joinery.
My favorite models are 6161 and 6162, both of which have a tall bead board panel below and a small louvered section at the top for ventilation, with either traditional 1 7/8-inch slats or 2 ½-inch plantation slats. The doors are made of soft, light basswood, from a tree known as lime, or linden. They can also be ordered in Spanish cedar, which stands up to humidity, or in hefty mahogany.
Kestrel sells handprinted muslin panels by the Walnut Street Studio that can be inserted in the doors for a decorative statement. The English cottage garden fabric, aglow with poppies, delphiniums and lavender, is charming.
For four unfinished folding panels to cover an opening measuring 60 inches wide by 77 ¾ inches tall, prices start at $612.16. (This price is for Model 6222, a louvered door with fixed plantation shutters.) Shipping and hardware are extra, as are paint or stain. Instead of installing doors, you can hang a curtain to mask the alcove. If you want to coordinate it with your existing décor, you can have it custom-made, but Kmart, Target, Urban Outfitters and Ikea have terrific-looking fabric shower curtains that can be cut to the desired length. Another choice is handblocked cotton curtains from Urban Outfitters, which come in sassy, bohemian motifs and range in price from $14.99 to $36 a panel.
