Like most firms tasked with renovating a storied 1950s Eichler property, Terry & Terry Architecture planned to keep the best parts of this Palo Alto, California, address in mind while modernizing certain aspects of it for the current owners. The pair wanted photovoltaic panels on a new roof form, solar water heating, a rain catchment system to offset energy use, and large overhangs to provide shade in the summer. The couple also requested a simplified floor plan, punctuated by a main living space that opens to to the surrounding landscape. Two existing bedrooms were made to feel more connected to the outdoors as well, and both new bedrooms feature sleeping porches.
