"It's amazing how quickly it has changed," said Mr Niwat. "Previously it was modern, with bright colours, but from the beginning to the end of 2008 the choice has been classic colours."

However, he added, strong colours are still used to add accent here and there. He noted that people in their forties and fifties who still have spending power in these difficult times prefer to mix the modern with the classic and create a different look.

When it comes to accessories, Mr Niwat has observed that this group is going in for classic pieces in silver and white as well as for light-coloured wood.

PIA has been helped by contracts obtained in India and Dubai. "India is not as strongly affected as Thailand and Southeast Asia. They are launching projects or are midway through them and are pushing for completion by 2010," Mr Niwat said.

He added that most sectors, including interior design, have been strongly affected by the political turbulence in Thailand and the lingering global economic crisis. Companies of the PIA grade, meaning those that attract wealthy clients, floated free of the direst consequences. However, regardless of how wealthy one might be, the mood right now is to economise. Mr Niwat admitted that clients often ask for a luxurious look that can be created out of a smaller budget.
