Next Spring, one of the most significant examples of mid-century modernist architecture will hit the auction block: The Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra. Estimated to sell at between $15 million and $25 million, the residential home will be offered at an evening sale at Christie's New York on May 13.

Commissioned in 1946 by Pittsburgh department store magnate Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. for a lot in California's Palm Springs desert, the Kaufmann house suffered major alterations of the years. In 1993, the home's new owners embarked on an extensive and detailed renovation including forensic study, spearheaded by architecture firm Marmol & Radziner. The project took over five years to complete and attracted international attention.

The home features horizontal planes of cantilevered roofs, glass floor-to-ceiling sliding walls, and Utah sandstone fireplace surrounds.

The New York sale is presented exclusively by Christie's Realty International. Christie's Great Estates, a Christie's subsidiary, is the exclusive selling agent in California.
