Ideas from Tina Turner. Diva Tina Turner crystallized her fireplace with energy-giving crystals that she lights from behind. See divadigs.com.
An Earthy look. Keep a box or urn of fresh wheat grass growing in your fireplace for instant Zen.
Candle-Crazed. Think candles and lots of them. Show off your mix-and-matched flea market candlesticks (love the look of mercury glass) or just use several sizes of candles standing on their own. If you're afraid of things looking a little busy, keep things monochromatic: all vanilla, all gold, or all silver.
Add some elegance. An ornate candelabra from Grandma or from a tag sale turns a boring fireplace into an event. Light up and let the magic happen.
Use dried flowers. Gather dried hydrangeas and display them in an old basket or timeworn tin bucket.
Family fun. Throw all your old, faded bocce balls or croquet balls in a basket or antique toy wagon. Great in a family room.
Antique appeal. A collection of old garden ornaments and finials give a fireplace a sense of antiquity...the more lichen and moss, the better.
Mirrored beauty. A gilded mirror placed in the back of a fireplace gives the illusion of depth and would reflect any candlelight beautifully.
Fountain fireplace. Put a serenity table fountain in your fireplace and, instead of a warm fire, let the sound of water relax you.
Faux fire. Cut a piece of plywood the width and height of your fireplace and paint it with black chalkboard paint. Place it inside the fireplace and push it towards the front. Draw flames and a pile of logs for a touch of fireside humor.
